Bloxham
One of the most impressive medieval parish churches in Oxfordshire, St Mary's, Bloxham, dates to the 12th century, but much of the current impressive building is from the 14th and 15th centuries. There are Norman carvings over the west door and a Norman tympanum in the chancel. The Milburne Chapel contains an imposing memorial to Sir John Thornycroft, and there are late medieval wall paintings throughout.... Read more..

Packwood, St Giles Church
St Giles church stands in a wooded glade, about a half mile north of the National Trust manor of Packwood House. The woodland should not be a surprise, for Packwood is part of that vast ancient woodland known as the Forest of Arden. We do not know when the first church was built here, but it may have been the late Saxon period.... Read more..

Lapworth, St Mary's Church
Nikolaus Pevsner, in his 2003 book 'The Buildings of Britain', called St Mary's church in Lapworth 'A splendid looking church'. He was right. Stoneleigh Abbey is a magnificent stately home that grew out of the remains of a 12th century abbey. The story of Stoneleigh goes back to 1154, when Henry II granted land here to a group of Cistercian monks. The monks began building Stoneleigh Abbey in 1155, and lived here until the abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1535.... Read more..

Blickling Hall
A dry moat, a remnant of an earlier Tudor house, surrounds this Jacobean masterpiece of a stately home. The house at Blickling has been described as one of the most romantic in England, and for good reason. Blickling was designed by architect Robert Lyminge, who also worked on Hatfield House, for Sir Henry Hobart, a fashionable lawyer. Lyminge also designed a formal garden, which was swept away by a new landscape garden in the late 18th century.... Read more..

Hexham Abbey is one of the great historic churches in the north of England. The abbey was founded in 674 AD by Bishop Wilfrid of York. Wilfrid's abbey was replaced by an Augustinian priory in the late 12th century, and it is this glorious early medieval church that we see today.
Castlerigg stone circle has featured numerous times as Picture of the Day. There's a good reason for that! For a start, its such a beautiful location, just outside Keswick, and its so easily accessed compared to some more remote stone circles. That ease of access means its not hard to get to the circle at dawn, without any other visitors around. Churches of Britain and Ireland | Photos of Churches
I think Steve Bulman likes visiting historic churches as much as I do. He also enjoys photography, for he has created Churches of Britain and Ireland, a wonderful resource of photographs of over 24,300 photos of churches across England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Now Steve did not visit all those churches himself - that would be the task of a lifetime, but he has created a marvellous website and encouraged people to send in photos of their own local church.... Read more..

The castle was besieged by Parliament during the Civil War, and 'slighted' so that it could not be used again. It is now owned by English Heritage and is easily accessed from Sherborne town centre.

Sherborne timber-framed building

I loved visiting Sherborne - there's so much history packed into this attractive town. Two castles and the fabulous abbey church get most of the attention, and rightly so, but there are so many historic buildings near the town core. This is simply a random photo of a timber-framed building I passed by on my way to the abbey.

Wales Coast Path Opens
What is the first country in the world to have a national trail stretching the entire length of its coastline? If you said Wales, you're right (award yourself a holiday in Pembrokeshire this summer). On Saturday, 5 May, 2012, the Wales Coastal Path officially opens.... Read more..

Iffley, St Mary's Church
The Norman church at Iffley, on the outskirts of Oxford, is among the finest examples of 12th century Norman architecture in England. There are superb carvings both inside and outside the church, and the site of a 13th century anchoress's cell near the chancel. The south doorway is particularly fine, with carvings of Green Men, grotesque beasts, knights, faces, and mythical creatures. The interior has three finely carved arches and 15th century stained glass depicting the De la Pole arms.... Read more..

Trafalgar Square

One of London's classic views - the slender pillar of Nelson's Column rises above Trafalgar Square. On one side of the Square is the National Gallery, almost opposite Admiralty Arch, which leads to The Mall and, eventually, to Buckingham Palace. The Square is named, naturally, for Admiral Nelson's great naval victory over the French fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Tate Britain

Tate Britain is the foremost London gallery devoted solely to British art. The gallery stands on the River Thames, just north of Vauxhall Bridge. The Tate Gallery was established in 1897 as a small museum called the National Gallery of British Art. As the collection grew the Tate divided into several sites, including newer 'Tates' in Liverpool and St Ives. Tate Britain is devoted to native British art from 1500 to the present day. The nearest underground station is Pimlico.
