Uber and ‘new players’ join UITP subsection

Brussels-based association welcomes new members

UITP, the international association of public transport, has welcomed a number of ‘new players’ as members.

Ride-hailing taxi app provider Uber is among the new members of the Brussels-based association, along with Door2Door, Citymapper, Moovel, Via, Grab, Ola, Yandex, 99 and Upstream.

UITP has created a new membership subsection called ‘Digital Platforms’, which will include players offering access to services or assets such as trip planning tools or ride sharing via the internet.

The association believes that these digital players have a role to play in providing sustainable urban mobility solutions. They will work together with existing UITP members on topics such as digitalisation, sustainable development and combined mobility.

Alone these new players do not have the capacity or capability to meet every journey need or solve congestion issues. They therefore need to operate to complement existing high quality public transport

UITP believes that new mobility options can step in when demand is low, in less densely populated areas and outside of peak times, where providing efficient public transport has proven to be challenging.

“Alone these new players do not have the capacity or capability to meet every journey need or solve congestion issues,” commented UITP secretary general Alain Flausch. “They therefore need to operate to complement existing high quality public transport.”
